Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Services Temporarily Suspended

Aug 1, 2022

Martin General Hospital, a 49-bed hospital in Williamston, NC, will temporarily suspend intensive care unit (ICU) services effective Aug. 1, 2022.

“Like many rural hospitals across the nation, our hospital has struggled to recruit nurses despite ongoing efforts,” said John Jacobson, CEO of Martin General Hospital. “The critical shortage levels are even more challenging in rural areas.”

Our Medical/Surgical Unit will remain open and fully operational, as will our Emergency Department.

For those patients who present to the ED needing higher-acuity intensive care, Martin General remains in close contact with ECU Health (formerly Vidant Medical Center) in Greenville, to facilitate quick transfers when necessary. Martin General also works with the University of North Carolina, Duke University Hospital, and WakeMed to ensure continuity of care.
